Many prefer distance education after Class XII

It's that time of the year again when there is a mad scramble for forms in colleges. But what's catching new is the growing popularity of distance learning courses among students. So far  more than 1700 application forms have already been submitted at the regional office of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) till date for the undergraduate distance learning courses.

The favourite subjects among students in the undergraduate course offered by IGNOU are bachelors in arts, bachelors in commerce, BCA, bachelors in tourism study and in social works. Most of the applicants are Class XII passouts. One of the major reasons behind the new found popularity of distance learning is that the syllabus of IGNOU is compatible with the syllabus of various competitive examinations.

So those who want to appear for competitive examinations can complete their graduation and prepare for other exams simultaneously. Still another section of students applies for distance learning when they are unable to get admission in any good college owing to less marks or those who come from rural areas and are unable to come to the city for higher education.

A sizeable chunk of the applicants are students who are unable to move out of their villages and seek admission in colleges of the city owing to financial or other reasons. Almost 45% students who apply at IGNOU are from rural areas. IGNOU is a boon for girls who are not allowed to step out of their homes for completing higher studies. Another reason for girls opting for IGNOU is the in-built flexibility of the university.
