India to follow US model of community colleges

In order to achieve the task of  imparting skills for 500 million youth, India on Tuesday made an announcement in this regard that it will implementing the US concept of community colleges to ensure that its workforce is adequately trained to meet new challenges. HRD minister Pallam Raju said that visualizing skill development should be an integral part of the country's education system, adding that based on the US experience of community colleges, India is devising plans to develop community colleges.

He was speaking to reporters after the India-US Higher Education Dialogue where he however said that they are cautious enough  not to blindly replicate what is happening in the US because the economic condition of the two nations are different. Raju said that it is a relevant model wherein over 100 years, the US has fine tuned that model which has become much more than impacting skills.

The minister reportedly assured that India will work closely with industry and business from the area to develop skill sets that are required from the local areas. Meanwhile, the US stressed towards jointly working towards increasing skills of students so that they can face future challenges which can be achieve through exchange programmes and partnerships between India and the US.

US Secretary of State John Kerry said they need to make sure that next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs have the skills and training and those who work in government and private sectors need to join together in order to focus and meet the challenges in education, he said. Raju and Kerry co-chaired the India-US Higher Education Dialogue.
